Why Should you Switch from Magento 1 to Magento 2?

Magento 2 is one of the world's leading e-commerce systems and a long awaited replacement to Magento 1. There are several reasons why you should switch to Magento 2.

You will experience many benefits of Magento 2. First of all it gives you added value and a better architectural structure that you can put to use right away. With an update to Magento 2 you also get improved speed and performance, extensions, and supported security. All benefits not seen before.

An important reason to migrate to Magento 2 is industry trends. Most industry developers have all moved on from Magento 1. And maybe your competitors are already well on their way to taking advantage of Magento 2. And it is a shame that you're getting behind while the competitors are having success with their Magento webshop which has improved speed and performance thanks to Magento 2.

There are many reasons why you should make a switch, and it can hardly go fast enough to get started. Still we recommend that you slow down before launching a lot. There is potentially a lot at stake when it comes to making the switch. In worst case you run the risk of losing important data in the move. Therefore MCB  is your helping hand and we have already helped customers migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2 and reduced the associated transition risks.

Increased Speed and Performance

Magento 2 supports the latest PHP releases. Its related security enhancements affect the speed of your webshop. At the same time there are reductions in unnecessary browser operations and JavaScript. This means that the pages load faster than in Magento 1. The speed difference corresponds to about 40 % more orders processed per hour. The changes in Magento 2 make the payment time 50 % faster than in Magento 1.

Extension Changes

Magento 1 had many extensions trying to rewrite the same functionality. This required a lot of manual corrections and workarounds. Magento 2 corrects the issue by allowing codes to overlap instead of overwriting. The new version also makes alterations faster using HTML5, CSS3, and Require.js. This gives companies like MCB a major advantage because they use these tools daily. Their speed allows you to enjoy the drop in modification costs.

7 Steps when migrating from Magento 1 to Magento 2

When you want to switch from Magento 1 to Magento 2 you should start by making a plan for the process. You need to thoroughly plan and test your migration before you get started.

First of all it is good idea to consider your exact needs and reason for the migration. At the same time we also recommend that you clean your Magento 1 before starting. You are doing yourself a favor by finding and deleting everything in your store that is no longer being used. This is also where you have the opportunity to make a complete backup of your store.

Here are the 7 steps you need to go through when updating from Magento 1 to Magento 2.

Step 1: Review Extensions

Assess all installed extensions. Determine what you need and what is not necessary for your new site. Also learn if Magento 2 versions of your needed extensions exist.

MCB can help you determine the best extension solutions based on use. We also help you determine what database assets need migrating. This is also the time to assess any theme-based configurations. Checking with the theme designer is prudent. They will know if it exists in Magento 2 and any potential changes.

Step 2: Build Magento 2 Store and Prep for Migration

The goal is to use topology and design that matches your existing Magento 1 system. This drives a simpler transition. Also required are all the Magento 2 release modules and data migration tools. The level of work involved depends on the experience of the developer team. It also dependent on the needed adjustments to the Data Migration Tool code. For instance, you may not need to migrate CMS Pages or Sales Rules.

MCB will determine if the conversion of customization should happen during the migration. Your current site determines the amount of actual prep work. Some of the activities might include:

  • Port customization
  • Port design
  • Update third-party extensions
  • Capacity planning
  • Map assembly

When planning for capacity consider adding advanced functionality within the store.

Step 3: Test, Test, and Test

At MCB we ensure that the migration is tested in a test environment before the transition is implemented. The test is performed as follows:

  • MCB moves a copy of your Magento 1 store to a staging server.
  • MCB migrates the copy to Magento 2.
  • Together with you we test all aspects of your Magento 2 store.

If something does not work the analysis tells where the problems occur. After the adjustments we run another test. Once completed it is time to do the right migration.

Step 4: Perform the Migration

MCB connects Magento 1 and Magento 2 databases through your network. The Magento 1 admin panel stops all migration activities. The expectations include:

  • Shipping
  • Creating invoices
  • Credit memos
  • Other operational processes (Selected and set in delta mode)

Any suspended activities can not resume until Magento 2 goes live. At this point MCB copies Magento 1 files to Magento 2. This manual process uses bulk copying of the database. As for the extensions for Magento 2 MCB will install the adapted extensions. If they have a different structure then MCB will use mapping files with the Data Migration Tool.

Step 5: Make Post Migration Changes

If needed MCB can make alterations to the site. This might include a new catalog structure or other changes after the migration. Manual data changes need careful action. Any mistakes will impact the next steps in the process. For instance let us say a product on Magento 1 is no longer available on Magento 2. If an order with the product transitions, it causes an error when running the Data Migration Tool.

The good news is that MCB's team of experts knows how to handle these situations. MCB tries to prevent these issues with advanced conversations. This results in adjusting the process to support the migration.

Step 6: Update Incremental Data

The next step is migrating the incremental updates. This might include updates for new orders, reviews, and customer profile changes. MCB handles these transfers using the Delta mode.

Step 7: Go Live

Now that you are ready for the cutover, Magento 1 gets placed in maintenance mode. Magento 2 gets reindexed. Also, the pages get cached for the customer's fast access to your new storefront. MCB excels during the final verification process. The DNS gets changed and MCB takes care of load balancers and setting pointers to new hardware. Then it is time to throw the live switch. All store activities are once again functional and live.
